At least ten cows have been killed in an attack on a community in Plateau State, with seven reportedly poisoned and three others shot dead along the Kwi–Heipang road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
Local sources said the incident occurred at about 7 p.m. when herders discovered several of their cattle lying lifeless in a grazing area near the roadside. Preliminary accounts indicate that seven of the animals may have ingested poisonous substances deliberately placed in the area, while three others were found with gunshot wounds.
Residents alleged that the attack was carried out by suspected members of a Berom militia group, although authorities have not confirmed the identities of those responsible. The killings have heightened tensions in the area, with community members expressing fears that the incident could trigger reprisals if not swiftly addressed.
Police authorities in Plateau State confirmed the incident and said a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the perpetrators. A police spokesperson stated that officers have visited the scene, collected evidence, and begun investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“The command has deployed operatives to the area and is working with community leaders to track down those responsible,” the spokesperson said, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
Community leaders have also appealed for restraint, calling on all parties to avoid actions that could escalate the situation. They further urged the state government to strengthen security patrols along rural roads and grazing areas to prevent similar incidents.
