Suspected bandits have attacked an illegal mining site in Plateau State, leaving one miner dead and another injured after a confrontation with security personnel.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the Jos axis of the state, where armed assailants invaded the mining location, causing panic among workers. The attackers were said to have opened fire, prompting a swift response from troops deployed to secure the area.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the clash between the bandits and security operatives led to the death of one miner, while another sustained injuries during the chaos. The troops reportedly engaged the attackers in a gun battle, eventually repelling the assault and restoring relative calm to the area.
Security sources say operations have since been intensified around mining communities in Plateau to prevent further attacks and track down the fleeing suspects. Illegal mining sites in the region have increasingly become hotspots for violent incidents, often attracting criminal groups due to their remote locations and limited regulation.
