Scientists Find Surprising Fertility Benefit Linked to Male Masturbation

A recent study suggests that masturbation may offer more than just short-term pleasure for men, revealing a potential benefit for sperm health and fertility.

Researchers from the analyzed over 100 human studies and dozens of animal studies to examine how sperm quality is affected by storage in the male body. Their findings indicate that prolonged abstinence from ejaculation may negatively impact sperm quality.

According to the study, sperm that remain stored for extended periods tend to show reduced movement, lower survival rates, and increased DNA damage. Scientists attribute this decline to factors such as oxidative stress and energy depletion, which weaken sperm over time.

The researchers suggest that more frequent ejaculation may help “flush out” older, damaged sperm, potentially improving overall sperm quality. This could have important implications for fertility treatments, including procedures like , where sperm quality plays a critical role.

While current guidelines from the recommend abstaining for a few days before providing a sperm sample, the new findings indicate that shorter intervals between ejaculations may actually yield better results.

Experts say the results highlight a simple, controllable factor that could support male fertility, although other influences such as stress, genetics, and environmental factors still play a major role.
