Ahead of 2027, Tinubu Reviews Northern Christian Names for Vice-Presidential Ticket

Fresh political conversations within Nigeria’s ruling party suggest that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is discreetly reviewing a shortlist of prominent northern Christian leaders as potential running mates ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Sources across print, broadcast, and online media platforms consistently point to four names said to be under serious consideration within the All Progressives Congress (APC): former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara; Defence Minister, Lt.-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.); Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah.

According to multiple reports, deliberations around these figures are taking place within the President’s inner political circle as part of a wider strategy to achieve religious and regional balance on the 2027 ticket. Notably, all four individuals hail from northern states with strong Christian populations.

Political analysts observe that, under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the President retains full discretion to select a running mate from any part of the country, provided constitutional requirements are met.

The renewed speculation comes against the backdrop of lingering public debate over the Muslim–Muslim ticket adopted by the APC in the 2023 general election. That decision attracted criticism from sections of the Nigerian public and drew international attention, including remarks from United States officials who called for greater inclusivity in Nigeria’s federal leadership structure.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually take shape, observers say the choice of a running mate could play a pivotal role in shaping public perception and electoral outcomes for the ruling party.
