President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended the economic reforms introduced by his administration, insisting that the hardship being faced by Nigerians is the unavoidable price of rebuilding the economy.
Speaking on Friday, Tinubu compared the situation to a patient undergoing surgery, stressing that pain is part of the process before full recovery.
“The suffering you are going through is like the pain that follows surgery,” the President said. “It is difficult, but necessary for the good of the patient. Nigeria must endure this phase to achieve long-term stability and prosperity.”
Tinubu highlighted the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate as policies that could no longer be delayed, despite their immediate impact on citizens’ living standards.
He assured Nigerians that his government was working on measures to reduce the burden through social interventions, but maintained that reversing the reforms would only worsen the nation’s economic challenges.
The President’s remarks come at a time when inflation, high food prices, and rising transportation costs have fueled widespread complaints, with critics accusing the government of worsening poverty and unemployment.
Tinubu, however, stood firm, urging patience and resilience. “We cannot run away from the truth. This sacrifice is necessary, and together we will overcome,” he said.
