Former president of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and ex-Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has appeared before a court in London as proceedings begin in a long-running corruption case against her.
The 65-year-old, who has been on bail since her arrest in the United Kingdom in 2015, is facing multiple charges linked to allegations that she accepted bribes while serving as Nigeria’s petroleum minister between 2011 and 2015. Prosecutors allege that she abused her position by receiving financial rewards in exchange for awarding multi-million-pound oil and gas contracts.
UK authorities formally charged Alison-Madueke in 2023, following years of investigation by the National Crime Agency. She has consistently denied all accusations against her.
The case is one of the most high-profile corruption trials involving a former Nigerian government official and comes amid continued international efforts to recover assets allegedly linked to illicit dealings in the country’s oil sector
