A potential return of José Mourinho to Real Madrid has been thrown into question following comments attributed to presidential hopeful Enrique Riquelme, who says the Portuguese coach would not be part of his plans if elected.
Riquelme, who is reportedly challenging incumbent club president Florentino Pérez, stated that Mourinho would not be appointed as manager under his leadership. He reportedly emphasized that his proposed coach “has not previously worked at Real Madrid,” signaling a preference for a fresh direction.
According to his remarks, Riquelme argued that the club must move away from short-term decision-making and instead enter what he described as a “genuine change of cycle” at the Santiago Bernabéu.
He also indicated that his project involves identifying “some of the best coaches in the world” managers with proven experience and strong leadership qualities suitable for the demands of the club. In addition, he claimed to have already reached an agreement with a coach currently employed by another team, though he did not reveal the individual’s identity.
The comments have sparked speculation over Real Madrid’s future managerial direction, particularly as Mourinho had previously been linked with a possible return to the club he once managed.
