Reports from credible sources indicate that the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is considering endorsing former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam, as the governorship candidate of the NDC in Kano State.
According to the sources, the decision followed a series of private consultations involving key figures within the Kwankwasiyya movement and close political associates of Kwankwaso.
Abdussalam resigned from his position as deputy governor in March, just weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against him.
Former APC governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, had earlier emerged as one of the leading contenders for the party’s governorship ticket.
However, reports suggest that Kwankwaso eventually settled for Abdussalam as his preferred candidate for the upcoming election.
Sources further disclosed that Gawuna was offered either the deputy governorship position or the Kano Central senatorial ticket, but he reportedly declined both offers while reaffirming his loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement.
According to insiders, Gawuna told Kwankwaso that he joined the movement without conditions, stressing that failure to secure the governorship ticket would not force him to leave the political camp.
The reports added that Gawuna’s refusal to accept the offers delayed the official announcement of Aminu Abdussalam, as some stakeholders continued to push for a reconsideration of Gawuna’s candidacy due to his political influence in Kano.
Some of Gawuna’s supporters argued that the candidate expected to challenge Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, should emerge from Kano Central, which is widely regarded as the region with the highest voting strength in the state.
Meanwhile, supporters of Aminu Abdussalam insist that the former deputy governor has demonstrated loyalty, commitment, and dedication to the growth of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano State.
