Belgium international footballer Jérémy Doku has sparked widespread debate after revealing he was prepared to temporarily leave his country’s FIFA World Cup campaign to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.
The controversy erupted after French journalist France Pierron criticised the decision, arguing that participating in the World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that should take precedence.
Her comments drew significant backlash on social media, particularly after she suggested that a father has little role to play during childbirth. Many football fans, players and commentators defended Doku, stressing the importance of family and a father’s presence during such a significant moment. Some argued that while the World Cup is temporary, family is for life.
Following the criticism, Pierron issued a public apology, saying her remarks reflected a personal opinion and were not intended to diminish the role of fathers during childbirth. French sports outlet L’Équipe also distanced itself from her comments and apologised to Doku and viewers.
Doku was subsequently granted permission to travel to London, where his wife gave birth to their son, Praise. Reports indicate that both mother and baby are in good health, and the Belgian winger is expected to rejoin the national team camp in the coming days.
