Traders and residents of Mushin, Lagos State, were thrown into panic on Monday after a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the popular Shoe Materials Market.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the explosion occurred beneath a parked vehicle after its engine was started. The device was reportedly concealed under the passenger side of the car, triggering a blast that disrupted activities in the bustling commercial area.
Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives swiftly responded to the scene, cordoning off the market and conducting a comprehensive sweep to rule out the presence of additional explosive devices. Authorities later confirmed that no other threats were discovered.
One person sustained injuries in the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Medical officials said the victim is responding well and remains in stable condition.
The Baale of Oke Mushin, Tajudeen Faronbi, said he alerted security agencies immediately after learning of the explosion, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement personnel.
Security has since been reinforced around the market, while forensic experts continue examining remnants of the device as investigations intensify to determine its origin and those responsible.
The Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and continue their normal activities, assuring the public that adequate measures are in place to maintain safety and security across the state.
