The Nigerian military has recorded fresh operational successes in Borno State, as 11 suspected terrorists surrendered to troops while eight others were killed during ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The development was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.
According to the statement, the surrendering fighters laid down their arms to troops during clearance operations conducted under Operation Desert Sanity V, a renewed offensive targeting terrorist hideouts and supply routes across the state. The suspects reportedly handed over their AK-47 rifles and other ammunition.
The military said the operation also involved sustained patrols and coordinated assaults on identified terrorist enclaves in various locations across Borno.
“In separate encounters between Sojiri and Kayamla villages, troops engaged terrorists in a fierce firefight, resulting in the neutralisation of eight fighters,” the statement said, adding that additional weapons and equipment were recovered at the scene.
The army noted that the recent gains reflect the increasing pressure being mounted on insurgent groups operating in the North-East, forcing several fighters to abandon their positions and surrender.
Security authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the offensive until remaining terrorist elements are dismantled and lasting peace is restored to the region.
