Abuja, Nigeria — Fresh controversy has erupted over alleged political interference in the 2025 admission process of the Nigeria Police Academy, following reports that several influential lawmakers allegedly secured admission slots for their preferred candidates.
According to documents obtained by Sahara Reporters, about 60 names were allegedly inserted into the official admission list under questionable circumstances. The insertions were reportedly facilitated by top political figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, his deputy Barau Jibrin, and other senators.
The report alleged that Akpabio nominated seven candidates — six from Akwa Ibom State and one from Nasarawa — while Jibrin allegedly sponsored five candidates from Kano State. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs was also linked to four nominees from Jigawa State.
Sources within the Nigeria Police Academy claimed that Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun allegedly approved the inclusion of these politically sponsored names, bypassing the academy’s standard merit-based recruitment procedure.
The development has sparked outrage among officers and stakeholders who argue that the move undermines transparency and meritocracy in police recruitment.
The Nigeria Police Force and the National Assembly have yet to issue official statements regarding the allegations.
