More than 1,000 demonstrators gathered outside a police station in Southampton following the release of bodycam footage showing the arrest of 18-year-old Henry Nowak shortly after he was fatally stabbed.
The footage, released after Vickrum Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years for the killing, shows Nowak repeatedly informing officers that he had been stabbed while in handcuffs. The teenager reportedly told officers four times that he was injured, but one officer responded that he did not believe him.
The video sparked widespread public outrage, with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer describing the footage as something that made him “feel sick.”
Calls for a demonstration were amplified on social media, and hundreds of protesters gathered outside the police station carrying Union Jack flags, placards, and photographs of Nowak. Demonstrators chanted slogans and demanded accountability from the police force.
Videos shared online appeared to show some protesters attempting to push through police lines, while officers formed a barrier around the station. The protest remained focused on concerns over the handling of the incident and the treatment of the victim in his final moments.
