A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed an application filed by the Nigeria Police Force seeking to stop the planned “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest scheduled for Monday, October 20.
The court ruled that the right to peaceful assembly and protest is constitutionally guaranteed, provided it is conducted within the confines of the law.
The police had approached the court, citing security concerns and potential disruption of public order. However, the judge maintained that such fears were speculative and insufficient to restrict citizens’ constitutional rights.
The protest, organised by supporters of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, is aimed at demanding his immediate release from custody.
