The Nigerian Senate has passed a new bill imposing the death penalty for kidnapping-related offences, marking one of the strongest legislative actions yet against the country’s growing wave of abductions.
The bill, reported by Sahara Reporters, seeks to overhaul existing laws by prescribing capital punishment in cases where victims are killed, while also imposing harsher penalties for attempted kidnapping and related crimes.
Lawmakers say the measure is intended to deter criminal groups responsible for widespread insecurity across several states. The bill will now proceed to the House of Representatives for concurrence before being forwarded to the president for assent.
If signed into law, the legislation would become one of Nigeria’s strictest anti-kidnapping statutes to date.
