Washington, D.C. — The Trump administration has frozen roughly $26 billion (€22 billion) in federal funding for infrastructure and development projects across Democratic-leaning states, coinciding with the first day of the federal government shutdown.
Officials said the freeze is part of an “emergency fiscal control measure” aimed at conserving cash reserves during the shutdown. The decision immediately affects ongoing projects tied to transportation, energy, and housing in several blue states, sparking backlash from Democratic governors who accused the White House of weaponizing the budget process.
Vice President JD Vance, speaking at a press briefing, warned that the administration may be forced to dismiss some federal employees if the shutdown stretches beyond a few days. “We hope this standoff resolves quickly, but if it doesn’t, we cannot guarantee that all federal workers will remain on payroll,” Vance said.
The shutdown, triggered by a budget impasse in Congress, has already led to the suspension of non-essential government services. Analysts warn that extended funding freezes could deepen political tensions and cause ripple effects across state economies.
