The government of Canada has announced a comprehensive update to its Express Entry immigration system for 2026, aiming to attract highly qualified workers to help fill critical labour shortages and support long-term economic growth.
Under the revised framework, new priority categories will target professionals with skills and experience in key sectors, including medical doctors with Canadian work experience, researchers, senior managers, transport workers such as pilots and aircraft mechanics, and highly skilled military personnel recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces.
Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab stated the changes reflect Canada’s commitment to aligning its immigration system with current labour market needs and to ensuring that newcomers can contribute effectively from day one.
Officials say the updated system will continue to hold targeted invitation rounds for French-speaking candidates and those in healthcare, trade and STEM occupations while also introducing new criteria designed to attract and retain “top talent” essential for economic expansion.
The overhaul is part of Canada’s broader International Talent Attraction Strategy a government initiative to boost competitiveness in a global race for skilled workers and to address pressing workforce gaps in key industries
