Nigerian troops have repelled an attack by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Borno State, killing several of the attackers during a fierce exchange of gunfire.
According to military sources, the insurgents launched the assault in the early hours, attempting to breach the defensive positions of the base. Alert troops reportedly engaged the attackers with superior firepower, forcing them into a prolonged gun battle.
The soldiers were said to have held their ground, inflicting significant casualties on the assailants and preventing them from overrunning the facility. Several ISWAP fighters were neutralised, while others fled the scene with possible gunshot wounds.
Security sources confirmed that no major damage was recorded within the base, and troops have since secured the surrounding area. A follow-up operation was also launched to pursue the fleeing insurgents and prevent further attacks on nearby communities.
The Nigerian military said the successful defence of the base underscores the continued resolve of troops to counter insurgency in the North-East, particularly in Borno State, which has remained a stronghold of terrorist activity despite sustained military operations.
