Authorities in Southern California have ordered the evacuation of nearly 28,000 residents after a fast-moving wildfire broke out on Monday morning near Los Angeles County.
The blaze, identified as the Sandy Fire, has rapidly expanded to more than 830 acres as firefighters intensify efforts to contain what is being described as the region’s first major wildfire of the year.
The fire erupted near residential suburbs in Simi Valley, an area in Ventura County bordering Los Angeles County, prompting emergency response teams to battle the flames amid dry and windy conditions.
Emergency officials say evacuation orders were issued to protect residents as the fire continued to spread across nearby communities. Fire crews remain on the ground working to prevent further destruction while authorities monitor the situation closely.
