The Nigerian Senate has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to enforce a total ban on the production and sale of sachet and small-bottle alcoholic drinks by December 2025.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South), who raised concerns over the increasing consumption of cheap alcoholic drinks among youths and minors.
Ekpenyong warned that the continued sale of alcohol in sachets and small containers poses serious health and social risks, adding that stricter regulations are necessary to safeguard public safety.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the matter as one of urgent national importance, emphasizing that the December deadline must be final and non-negotiable.
The upper chamber also urged the Federal Ministry of Health to fast-track the release of a National Alcohol Policy and directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch public campaigns on the dangers of sachet alcohol consumption.
Lawmakers warned that manufacturers who fail to comply with the directive after the deadline would face severe sanctions.
The planned ban is part of efforts to curb the growing rate of substance abuse and alcohol-related incidents across the country.
