ILORIN, Kwara State
A pall of grief hangs over Ogbayo village in Ifelodun Local Government after bandits launched a deadly attack that left twelve local vigilantes, including the community head, dead.
The assailants stormed the village in the early hours of Saturday, opening fire on residents and vigilantes who had mobilized to defend the community. Witnesses said the attackers outnumbered the local defenders, forcing families to flee into nearby bushes.
Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed the deaths and said four injured persons were receiving treatment in hospital. Security forces, including police and the military, have since intensified a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo described the killings as “heinous” and pledged that those responsible would not go unpunished. He also extended condolences to the grieving families.
The attack has sparked fear and sorrow across the area, where vigilante groups remain the first line of defense for rural communities facing recurrent bandit raids.
