The Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Area, Engineer Sagir Tanimu, has sparked public criticism after attending the wedding ceremony of the children of known bandits in Kadawan Dandume village, despite ongoing security concerns and unresolved peace talks in the area.
According to local reports, the ceremony was also attended by traditional leaders, including representatives from the Emirate Council and the District Head of Sabuwa. The event is believed to be part of ongoing reconciliation efforts between local authorities and armed groups operating in Katsina State.
However, the gesture has drawn mixed reactions from residents and civil society groups, who argue that such appearances could undermine the government’s credibility in addressing banditry. They insist that reconciliation should only follow after militants surrender their weapons and commit to peace.
Security analysts warn that symbolic engagements, such as attending social events involving armed actors, could send the wrong signal at a time when communities remain under threat from sporadic attacks and kidnappings.
The Katsina State Government has in recent months pursued dialogue with armed groups across affected local government areas, including Matazu and Faskari, as part of a broader peace initiative aimed at restoring stability in the region.
