ILORIN, Nigeria – In response to escalating bandit attacks across several communities, Kwara State authorities have ordered the immediate shutdown of 45 public schools and announced that affected teachers will be redeployed to safer locations.
Prof. Sheu Ibrahim Adaramaja, Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), made the disclosure Tuesday during an inter-ministerial press briefing in Ilorin. He explained that the closures target schools in areas such as Babanla, Baba Sango, Sangbe, and Oke-Ode, where the risk to students and staff has grown intolerably high.
Prof. Adaramaja emphasized that the redeployment is intended to ensure salary continuity while protecting lives. To boost morale and performance, the state government has additionally approved 2025 teacher promotions and eliminated Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies in all public schools.
In Patigi Local Government Area, residents have taken to the streets to protest deteriorating security. They say armed attacks have left their hospitals deserted, farms abandoned, and families living in fear. Elders and youths urged the government to relocate Kara Market accused of becoming a hub for suspicious activity and increase security presence in vulnerable rural and forested zones.
Despite assertions from political figures that security is improving, communities like Patigi warn that the situation remains dire. They call on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, lawmakers, and security agencies to prioritize life-saving interventions before the crisis worsens.
