Russia has reportedly transferred nuclear munitions to Belarus as part of joint military drills between the two allies, further escalating tensions with NATO over the ongoing war in Ukraine. The development comes amid growing fears of a wider regional confrontation involving Western powers.
According to Russian and Belarusian defence officials, the exercises involve the movement and deployment of nuclear-capable missile systems across both countries. Moscow says the drills are aimed at strengthening the security of the Russia-Belarus alliance in response to what it describes as increasing threats from NATO.
The military exercises reportedly include nuclear-capable Iskander missile systems, submarines, strategic bombers and hypersonic weapons. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the drills are intended to maintain Russia’s nuclear readiness and deter external aggression.
The move has triggered concern among NATO members and Ukraine, with officials warning that the deployment could further destabilise Eastern Europe. Belarus, which borders several NATO countries, has increasingly played a central role in Russia’s military operations since the Ukraine war began.
