The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading viral reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.
In a statement issued on Thursday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described the reports as fake news aimed at creating tension and political instability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the Presidency, President Tinubu has no intention of sponsoring any constitutional amendment bill reportedly code-named “Project True Federation” or forwarding such a proposal to the National Assembly.
The statement further stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria require extensive legislative procedures, including approval by the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.
The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the viral claims and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing division and unrest in the country.
