The U.S. Department of Defense has announced new restrictions requiring journalists covering the Pentagon to agree to stricter reporting rules or risk losing their press credentials.
Under the directive, reporters must obtain clearance from designated officials before publishing information obtained inside the Pentagon, even if the material is unclassified. Those who fail to comply may be denied access to the building.
Pentagon officials defended the policy, saying unauthorized disclosures could pose risks to national security.
However, press freedom advocates have condemned the move. The National Press Club described it as “a direct assault on independent journalism,” while the Society of Professional Journalists warned it could be unconstitutional and harmful to government transparency.
