No fewer than 109 Nigerian nationals have been detained in India over alleged involvement in drug trafficking and related offences, according to recent reports.
The arrests were made during coordinated police operations targeting suspected drug dealers and undocumented residents in different parts of the country as part of an intensified anti-narcotics campaign.
Indian authorities said the suspects were initially picked up for verification of their travel and residency documents. During the operation, security agencies also recovered about two kilograms of cocaine.
Officials explained that the crackdown forms part of broader efforts to curb the activities of foreign nationals believed to be involved in drug distribution and other criminal networks. As part of the campaign, police have increased patrols and carried out raids in areas known for high levels of illegal activities.
Data from India’s Narcotics Control Bureau showed that Nigerians were among the most frequently arrested foreign nationals in drug-related cases, with 106 Nigerians listed among 660 foreign suspects detained in 2024.
The development has sparked discussions on the need for stronger cooperation between Nigeria and India in tackling transnational crimes. However, neither government has so far issued a detailed statement on the latest arrests.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities said investigations and legal verification processes are ongoing, while the detained Nigerians remain in custody.
