Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called on residents to immediately report any cleric or individual attempting to impose Sharia law, following a viral video showing a Muslim preacher in Houston demanding shopkeepers halt the sale of alcohol, pork, and lottery tickets.
In a statement on his official X handle, Abbott reaffirmed his administration’s tough stance against the practice, stressing that Texas laws already prohibit what he described as “Sharia compounds” and any attempts to enforce Islamic compliance.
“I signed laws that BAN Sharia Law and Sharia Compounds in Texas. No business & no individual should fear fools like this. If this person, or ANYONE, attempts to impose Sharia compliance, report it to local law enforcement or the Texas Dept. of Public Safety,” Abbott wrote.
The viral video, widely shared online, shows the cleric instructing shop owners in the Houston area to abide by Islamic injunctions against alcohol, gambling, and pork.
Abbott’s response comes amid heightened national debate over religion, immigration, and extremism in the United States, with Texas Republicans often spearheading efforts against what they view as threats to American values.
The Governor’s statement drew mixed reactions online. Journalist Amy Mek criticized Abbott for what she described as a delayed response, while far-right activist Laura Loomer claimed the incident reflected a broader failure of Republican leadership on extremism.
Other social media users also weighed in. One user demanded authorities “hunt down criminals” rather than rely on reports, while another pointed out that Christianity also condemns alcohol and gambling, stressing however that religious rules should not be imposed on others.
The controversy adds to ongoing tensions in Texas, a state at the center of heated debates over cultural identity, religious freedom, and security.
