Northern Elders Urge Governors to Negotiate with Bandits

Northern elders have called on state governors to consider engaging in dialogue with bandits as part of efforts to end the rising wave of insecurity in the region. The appeal, which featured prominently in Monday’s newspaper headlines, comes amid growing concern over persistent attacks, kidnappings, and displacement of residents in parts of the North.

The elders argued that while military operations and security crackdowns have recorded some successes, dialogue could provide an alternative path to peace and stability.

They stressed that prolonged violence has worsened humanitarian crises, disrupted farming activities, and deepened poverty across affected communities.

Their position has, however, sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with critics warning that negotiating with bandits could embolden criminal groups, while supporters see it as a pragmatic step to save lives.
