A Nigerian man currently in the Russian Federation has appealed to the Federal Government for urgent repatriation after alleging he was deceived and conscripted into the Russian military instead of being given the civilian job he expected, according to multiple reports.
The man, identified in legal correspondence as Abubakar Adamu, told representatives that he travelled to Russia on what he believed was a legitimate employment opportunity. Upon arrival, his travel documents were allegedly confiscated and he was coerced into signing service papers in Russian, which he later discovered were contracts with the Russian Armed Forces.
According to details emerging from related sources, Adamu and others were promised work as security personnel but were instead sent to military training and later deployment in the conflict in Ukraine. Reports indicate that several other Nigerians in similar circumstances have been killed in the conflict, with information first shared through private messaging groups.
In a separate account, another Nigerian national, Balogun Adisa Ridwan, described being “lucky” to have been captured by Ukrainian forces after being sent to the frontlines under false pretences and is now appealing for governmental assistance to return home.
The developments have renewed attention on reports that some African migrants are being lured to Russia with promises of jobs but are ending up in military service, a situation that Russia has officially denied is state-sponsored.
Adamu’s legal representatives are urging authorities to facilitate his safe return to Nigeria and the release of his confiscated travel documents, asserting that his enlistment was secured under misrepresentation and without adequate understanding of the contract he signed.
