A police officer has been killed in Plateau State after being mistaken for a thief when a notorious suspect raised a false alarm.
Inspector Lasare Jeremiah, attached to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Plateau State Command, was part of a team dispatched to arrest one Audu Abdullahi, a wanted suspect in Nyakala, Bassa Local Government Area.
According to police sources, as officers attempted to arrest him, Abdullahi shouted that Jeremiah and his colleague were motorcycle thieves. Residents, believing the claim, descended on the officers.
Jeremiah was beaten severely before the mob realized the truth.Both Jeremiah and Abdullahi were rushed to Cottage Hospital in Kisalloi. The inspector later died from his injuries, while Abdullahi was transferred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he also died.
The incident, which occurred on September 10, 2025, is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Jos.Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, condemned the act, warning the public against jungle justice and urging communities to cooperate with law enforcement.
