French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu as France’s new Prime Minister, in a decision announced late Tuesday night.
The move comes as part of a broader government reshuffle, aimed at consolidating political support and strengthening the administration’s position ahead of key domestic and European challenges.
Lecornu, 38, becomes the youngest person to assume the role under the Fifth Republic. He has been a close ally of Macron, serving in multiple capacities, including Minister for Overseas Territories and most recently as Minister of the Armed Forces. His leadership during the Ukraine war and management of defense reforms are seen as factors that contributed to his elevation.
Analysts suggest Macron’s choice may also be a strategic attempt to appeal to right-leaning voters and ease political tensions with opposition parties, particularly amid growing pressure from the far right.
Lecornu succeeds Gabriel Attal, whose resignation earlier in the day paved the way for the appointment. Attal, France’s youngest-ever prime minister, had faced mounting political challenges during his tenure.
The new Prime Minister is expected to quickly form a government and set policy priorities as Macron navigates the remaining years of his second term.
