The Kogi State Government has integrated over 2,500 members of the state’s vigilante group into the civil service, marking a major step in its strategy to strengthen security and curb criminal activities across the state.
Governor Usman Ododo announced the development, stating that the move reflects his administration’s commitment to improving community-based policing and ensuring the sustainability of local security networks. The integration, he said, would provide the vigilante members with stable employment, welfare benefits, and a structured framework to collaborate effectively with other law enforcement agencies.
According to the government, the decision was taken after an assessment of the vigilante members’ performance in various communities, where they have played crucial roles in combating banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of insecurity.
Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, noted that the exercise would also enhance intelligence gathering at the grassroots level and ensure a coordinated approach to security management. He emphasized that the move demonstrates the administration’s recognition of the vigilantes’ sacrifices and their importance in safeguarding lives and property.
Local government chairmen and traditional rulers have also commended the initiative, describing it as a proactive step that will further strengthen peace and stability in Kogi State.
The newly absorbed officers will undergo further training and orientation to align with civil service standards and operational protocols.
