A police inspector identified as Aminu Ibrahim has died in Kano after he reportedly shot himself by mistake while on duty at Hotoro.
Daily Trust gathered that the incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. on Saturday when the officer, attached to Hotoro Police Division, entered the restroom of a company in the area.
Sources said Ibrahim’s AK-47 rifle, which was hanging from his neck, discharged accidentally as he bent to squat, hitting him fatally. The rifle, numbered GT 4177, was recovered with 29 out of the 30 rounds of ammunition earlier issued to him.
He was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead. His remains have since been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.
Kano police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said investigations into the incident are ongoing and findings will be made public.
