Katsina State – The Katsina State Government has revoked the operating licences of all private and community schools across the state as part of ongoing reforms in the education sector.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the revocation took effect on August 13, 2025, and affects every private and community-owned school currently operating in the state.
The government said the move was aimed at ensuring quality assurance, standardisation, and improved supervision of schools to enhance the standard of education.
Following the revocation, all school proprietors are now required to reapply for fresh licences under a new regulatory framework. The process includes the payment of updated application, registration, and renewal fees into the state’s single treasury account, with evidence of payment to be submitted to the Department of Private and Community Schools before September 30, 2025.
While schools have been allowed to continue operating during the re-registration process, the government warned proprietors against increasing school fees to offset the new licence costs. Any adjustments in tuition or related charges, the statement added, must first be approved by the Ministry.
The Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education further disclosed that more details on the categorisation of schools and the new fee structure would be communicated to the National Association of Proprietors of Private and Community Schools (NAPPCOS).
The reforms, which were first presented at a stakeholders’ meeting on June 2, 2025, mark a major shake-up in the regulation of private and community education in Katsina State.
