In a dramatic turn of events, prominent Katsina businessman Anas Ahmadu, his seven-month pregnant wife Halimatu, and their two-year-old daughter have been released by their abductors after enduring 21 harrowing days in captivity.
The family, abducted from their home in the Filin Canada Quarters area of Katsina metropolis on August 26, 2025, regained their freedom late Wednesday night following the payment of a N50 million ransom.
The ordeal began in the early hours of August 26 when armed assailants stormed the family’s residence, whisking away Anas, Halimatu who was heavily pregnant at the time and their young daughter without resistance. Sources close to the family revealed that the kidnappers initially issued a staggering demand of N600 million for the safe return of the trio.
Negotiations proved protracted and tense, with the ransom amount slashed to N100 million by September 3, 2025, amid desperate pleas from relatives. After further haggling, the abductors finally agreed to N50 million, which was promptly paid to secure the release.
A relative of the victims, speaking anonymously to reporters for security reasons, confirmed the family’s liberation in a moment of profound relief. “Alhamdulillah! Anas, Halimatu, and their daughter have been released by their captors tonight. They are on their way home. But a ransom of N50 million was paid to the assailants,” the relative stated.
The family member withheld specifics on the handover location, citing ongoing safety concerns.
As of the latest reports, the freed family members were en route to their home, though details on their physical and emotional conditions remain scarce. Halimatu’s advanced pregnancy raised particular alarms during the captivity, with fears mounting for her health and that of the unborn child. No immediate medical updates were available, but authorities are expected to provide support for any necessary care.
Notably, the incident unfolded without apparent intervention from security forces or law enforcement, highlighting persistent challenges in combating kidnappings in Nigeria’s northwest region. Katsina State, like neighboring areas, has seen a surge in such abductions targeting affluent residents, often linked to banditry and economic desperation.
