U.S. intelligence officials reportedly believe that Israel planned to assassinate several senior Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, during diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities between United States and Iran, according to reports by The New York Times and The Washington Post.
The reports state that U.S. officials assessed that the alleged Israeli plan was conceived earlier this year while negotiations were underway to secure a ceasefire and ease tensions between Washington and Tehran. The reported operation was said to have targeted some of Iran’s highest-ranking political figures involved in the diplomatic process.
Neither Israeli nor Iranian authorities have publicly confirmed the reported allegations. The reports have added to concerns over the fragility of diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation in the region.
