The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed how suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, allegedly stole ₦7.2 million from the bank account of a serving judge in an overnight cyberattack.
According to the EFCC chairman, the stolen funds were intended for the payment of the judge’s child’s school fees. He described the incident as a stark reminder of the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the serious threat internet fraud poses to Nigerians, regardless of their status.
He disclosed that the anti-graft agency launched an investigation into the incident, which led to the successful recovery of the stolen money. The EFCC chairman said the case underscores the commission’s commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting citizens from financial fraud.
He further warned members of the public to remain vigilant and adopt stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard their bank accounts and personal information from online criminals.
The EFCC reiterated its resolve to intensify efforts against internet fraud and bring perpetrators to justice, while urging Nigerians to promptly report suspicious financial activities to the appropriate authorities.
