A newly formed youth movement in India known as the “Cockroach Janata Party” has stirred major political conversations across social media, attracting millions of followers within hours.
The movement gained momentum after India’s chief justice reportedly compared some young people involved in fake degree scandals to insects and cockroaches during a court hearing on May 15.
Shortly after the remarks, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the online-based movement, posted a question on social media asking, “What happens when cockroaches unite?” The post quickly went viral, triggering massive engagement from Indian youths on Instagram and X.
The party’s Instagram page reportedly crossed one million followers by Tuesday night before surging past three million within a few hours.
Several opposition supporters and former civil servants have also publicly expressed interest in joining the movement online, further increasing its visibility.
The rapid rise of the “Cockroach Janata Party” has drawn comparisons with youth-driven movements that previously influenced political change in countries such as Nepal and Bangladesh, although the group says it is not seeking to overthrow the government.
Organisers say the movement is now preparing for its first major gathering, expected to host more than 350,000 registered supporters.
