Teacher Shot by Six-Year-Old Student Awarded $10 Million in Damages

A U.S. elementary school teacher who was shot by her six-year-old student has been awarded $10 million in compensation following a court settlement.

The teacher, identified as Abigail Zwerner, was seriously injured in January 2023 when the child brought a handgun to Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, and opened fire during class.

Zwerner filed a lawsuit against the school district, alleging negligence and failure to act despite multiple warnings that the student posed a threat.

In the ruling, the court found that school officials ignored repeated concerns raised by staff members prior to the shooting.

Zwerner’s legal team said the verdict sends a clear message about the importance of protecting educators and enforcing school safety protocols.

The school district has not indicated whether it plans to appeal the decision.
