Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to be imprisoned on Tuesday following his conviction for allegedly receiving illegal campaign funds from Libya during his 2007 presidential bid.
The ruling makes Sarkozy the first former head of state from the European Union to face imprisonment over such charges.
In late September, a French court found the ex-president guilty of colluding with late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to finance his campaign. Sarkozy, however, has appealed the verdict, describing it as a “grave injustice.”
He is expected to begin serving his sentence at La Santé Prison in Paris on Tuesday. The move marks the first time a French leader has been jailed since Philippe Pétain, the head of the Nazi-collaborating Vichy regime during World War II, who was imprisoned after the war.
