A South African court has convicted opposition leader Julius Malema for firing a gun during a political rally, a case that has trailed him for years.
Malema, who heads the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was found guilty on Tuesday for unlawfully discharging a firearm during the party’s fifth anniversary celebration in the Eastern Cape in 2018.
Video footage from the rally showed Malema pulling out a gun and firing shots into the air before a cheering crowd, an act prosecutors argued endangered public safety.
The ruling marks a significant legal setback for one of South Africa’s most prominent opposition figures, known for his fiery rhetoric and mass rallies. Sentencing is expected to follow at a later date.
