The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed five textile-warehouses in Kano for reportedly engaging in exploitative practices against customers, according to a statement released by the agency.
During the operation, the Commission said it discovered large quantities of goods being sold under misleading conditions, prompting immediate enforcement action. The specific infractions cited include deceptive pricing, non-conforming packaging and alleged unfair trade practices that violate the provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018.
A senior enforcement officer said the warehouses were sealed to protect the rights of consumers and to send a signal that the Commission will not tolerate commercial behaviour that undermines buyer trust. The identities of the warehouse operators have not been released pending further investigation.
In response to the enforcement, the FCCPC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that markets operate fairly, and urged all traders to comply with regulations or face sanctions. Consumer groups have welcomed the action, calling it a step toward strengthening accountability in Nigeria’s retail and wholesale sectors.
Analysts say the move may also reflect a broader strategy by the Commission to crack down on systemic abuses in the textile trade, where consumer complaints about quality, measurement and transparency have long been raised.
