Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their security partnership and agreed to deepen cooperation on defence, intelligence sharing, and military support, Nigerian government officials said.
The renewed commitment follows high-level engagements in Washington, D.C., between Nigerian representatives and senior U.S. government officials, aimed at strengthening bilateral security ties and expanding areas of collaboration.
According to a statement from the presidency, the United States expressed readiness to provide enhanced intelligence support, defence equipment, and other military resources to bolster Nigeria’s operations against terrorist and violent extremist groups. Both countries also agreed to activate a non-binding cooperation framework and establish a joint working group to coordinate agreed areas of cooperation.
The discussions take place amid broader U.S.–Nigeria security collaboration, including precision firepower support programmes with the Nigerian Air Force and previously approved foreign military sales designed to strengthen Nigeria’s counterterrorism capabilities.
Nigeria continues to face Islamist insurgency and other security threats across several regions, and officials said the expanded cooperation would prioritise civilian protection, intelligence-driven operations, and the safeguarding of lives and property.
As of the time of reporting, neither government has provided a detailed timeline for the delivery of specific military equipment or the full scope of U.S. assistance, though officials say the renewed partnership signals continued engagement on security matters.
