One person has been confirmed dead while six others sustained injuries after operatives of the Ocha Brigade, Anambra State’s environmental enforcement task force, allegedly opened fire on traders at the Onitsha Main Market on Tuesday.
The clash between the task force and traders escalated into gunfire, causing panic and unrest in the busy market.Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, noting that police officers were swiftly deployed to restore calm.
He said the victims, including Ebuka Orakwe, Orum Oluebube, Anthony Kosisochukwu, Ifeoma Ezema, and 22-year-old Chinwe Igwe, alongside two unidentified individuals, were rushed to hospital.Ikenga added that Igwe later died from her injuries, and her remains have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.
He also revealed that the task force leadership has been summoned to identify the officers involved, with the aim of prosecuting them.In a separate statement, Anambra’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said Governor Chukwuma Soludo has directed the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the shooting.
