Thousands of commuters across Kenya were left stranded on Monday after public transport operators began a nationwide strike in protest against rising fuel prices.
Major roads in Nairobi were largely deserted as transport services shut down, forcing many residents to trek long distances to their workplaces. Several businesses reportedly remained closed, while some schools advised students to stay home due to the disruption.
In parts of the country, protesters blocked roads and erected burning barricades as demonstrations intensified. Police authorities disclosed that more than 200 people had been arrested in connection with the unrest.
The strike follows a recent increase in petroleum prices announced by the government, with fuel costs reportedly rising by over 20 percent to record levels.
