Washington County, Utah – Authorities have identified Tyler Robinson, 22, as the suspect in custody over the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Robinson was arrested on Wednesday evening after a family member reportedly told a friend that he had either confessed to or hinted at his involvement in the shooting. He is currently being held without bail and faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and firearms violations.
Investigators say Robinson used a bolt-action hunting rifle fitted with a scope, believed to be the weapon recovered after the incident. Bullet casings found at the scene carried unusual inscriptions such as “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “Oh bella ciao …”.
Authorities also linked Robinson to messages on the chat app Discord, where discussions allegedly included obtaining a rifle, engraving bullets, and possible references to Kirk’s scheduled appearance. Surveillance footage and physical evidence including footprints and palm prints on a rooftop near the venue further tied him to the attack.
Robinson briefly attended Utah State University in 2021 and was later enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College. Public records list him as a nonpartisan voter, though Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson had become “increasingly political” in recent years and developed hostile views toward Kirk.
Officials maintain that Robinson acted alone, though the precise motive for the shooting remains unclear.
The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies continuing to piece together Robinson’s movements and preparations leading up to the shooting.
