The Lagos State Government has defended its ongoing demolition exercise at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, citing a Supreme Court judgment as the legal basis for its action.
In a statement issued on Monday, the state government explained that the exercise was aimed at reclaiming portions of the complex that were illegally occupied and developed without approval. It maintained that the affected structures contravened the state’s physical planning regulations and encroached on government-owned land.
According to the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, the government was merely enforcing a long-standing court ruling affirming its ownership and control over the property. He noted that the Supreme Court had, in its judgment, upheld Lagos State’s authority over the site, thereby validating the current enforcement measures.
The commissioner stressed that due process was followed, including prior notices to traders and occupants, urging the public to disregard claims that the demolition was politically motivated or targeted at any group.
Several shop owners and traders at the complex have, however, condemned the demolition, alleging that they were not adequately informed before the operation commenced. They called on the government to provide alternatives or compensation for their losses.
The Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, located along the Badagry Expressway, has long been a major commercial hub housing thousands of businesses and serving as a key economic center in the state.
