UK Court Holds BHP Group Liable for Brazil’s Deadliest Environmental Disaster

A UK judge has ruled that BHP Group is liable for its role in Brazil’s worst environmental disaster, a major development in the years-long legal battle over the 2015 Mariana dam collapse.

The ruling marks a significant step for hundreds of thousands of Brazilian claimants seeking compensation after the Fundão dam failure unleashed a massive torrent of toxic mining waste, killing 19 people, destroying entire communities, and polluting waterways across two states.

The decision paves the way for further proceedings to determine damages, with BHP expected to face one of the largest environmental compensation claims brought before a UK court. The company has yet to issue a formal response following the judgment.
