Manchester, UK – At least two people were killed and three others injured on Thursday morning following an attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester.
According to Greater Manchester Police, the assailant rammed a car into bystanders before stabbing multiple victims, including a security guard. Officers on the scene shot the attacker dead after suspecting he carried explosive devices.
The incident occurred during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, prompting authorities to declare a major incident and activate the “PLATO” protocol used for suspected terror-related attacks.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who cut short a trip to Brussels, condemned the assault as “appalling” and pledged government support to ensure the safety of Jewish communities across the country. King Charles III also expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
Bomb disposal teams and counter-terrorism officers are continuing investigations, with heightened security measures deployed around synagogues nationwide.
